Marsala
Marsala
The ancient Lilibeo is one of the most important municipalities in the province of Trapani both for the richness of its cultural heritage and for its size and economic importance. An active and vital city, it has numerous archaeological areas, churches and palaces in a historic centre that testifies to the various successive dominations (Punics, Romans, Arabs, Normans). It is here that Garibaldi landed with the Thousand on the way to the Unification of Italy.
But Marsala is known above all for the homonymous wine that has made it famous throughout the world and which you can taste in the numerous wineries open to the public.
Its territory includes the Stagnone Islands Oriented Nature Reserve, where the island of Mozia stands out, an ancient phoenician city, which, within a few hectares, collects a natural and historical-archaeological heritage that is unique in the world.
Exclusive to the territory of Marsala is the landscape with the enchanting countryside, the beaches, the Stagnone and the phoenician Mozia. Coming up to the city are the vines, with regular rows of vines, the protagonists of the agricultural landscape dotted with baileys, while in the access roads to the inhabited centre, are the large wineries.
But the real protagonist of this landscape is man, capable of cultivating vines down to the sea, and the sea itself with the salt pans to produce salt by exploiting the power of the wind and the heat of the sun.
The waters of the salt pans with their windmills, are a magical spectacle when at sunset they turn red and the salt pools pink, thanks to particular halophilic archaea bacteria, or in the period between June and September when the white mounds of salt appear.
From Capo Boeo and Rakalia, you can enjoy wonderful views of the coast, the Egadi islands, the Stagnone, up to Mount Erice.
Culture and History
In Marsala, history is the protagonist in every place: in the outcropping remains of the ancient Lilibeo, founded by the Phoenicians of Mozia who escaped the destruction of the city in 397 BC, in the streets, palaces and churches. Passed to the Romans, it became a "splendid urbs", as Cicero defined it, who was quaestor here in 75 BC, and was a fervent commercial and strategic center thanks to the port, also appreciated by the Arabs for its proximity to Africa.
When in the 16th century Charles V ordered its burial to avoid attacks by pirates, the city lost its maritime importance and assumed a strategic and military role.
The history of the nineteenth century speaks of Garibaldi who, with the historic landing of the Thousand, on 11 May 1860, gave rise to the liberation of the island from the Bourbons, as well as English traders, Woodhouse, Ingham, Whitaker and the Florio who discovered wine and propagate it around the world.
