{"id":2961,"date":"2021-10-11T09:59:49","date_gmt":"2021-10-11T09:59:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.itineraridelgustotrapani.it\/uncategorized\/the-secco-tonnara\/"},"modified":"2021-10-11T09:59:49","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T09:59:49","slug":"the-secco-tonnara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itineraridelgustotrapani.it\/en\/uncategorized\/the-secco-tonnara\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u2018Secco\u2019 Tonnara"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Tonnara on dry ground, now disused, was a facility needed to support the Tonnara (system of boats and nets) at sea for the fishing of tuna.<br \/>\nThe \u2018<strong>Tonnara del Secco<\/strong>\u2019 had warehouses for storing nets, shelters for boats and cottages for the accommodation of crews, as well as a plant for processing tuna.<\/p>\n<p>The first official news of the San Vito Tonnara date back to <strong>1412<\/strong>, when King Ferdinand gave permission for the fishing of tuna in the sea of San Vito.<\/p>\n<p>In the sea of\u00a0<strong>San Vito<\/strong>, the nets for catching tuna- which in spring were numerous in the waters of the Castellammare Gulf \u2013 were dropped from the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century until 1968.<br \/>\nToday the traditional \u201c<em><strong>mattanza<\/strong><\/em>\u201d (slaughter), a term which indicates the bloody ritual killing of tuna in the so-called death chamber, is no longer practiced.<\/p>\n<p>A few metres from the building are the remains of ancient <em>cetariae\u00a0<\/em>(fishponds) , dating from the 4<sup>th<\/sup> century BC, in which they processed fish, including tuna, to achieve the prized garum (fish sauce), much appreciated by ancient Romans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Tonnara on dry ground, now disused, was a facility needed to support the Tonnara (system of boats and nets) at sea for the fishing of tuna.
