{"id":2938,"date":"2021-10-11T09:14:43","date_gmt":"2021-10-11T09:14:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.itineraridelgustotrapani.it\/uncategorized\/the-mysteries-of-trapani\/"},"modified":"2021-10-11T09:14:43","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T09:14:43","slug":"the-mysteries-of-trapani","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.itineraridelgustotrapani.it\/en\/uncategorized\/the-mysteries-of-trapani\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u2018Mysteries\u2019 of Trapani"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The<strong>\u00a0<em>Misteri<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>(Mysteries), ie groups of statues depicting scenes from the\u00a0<strong>Passion of Christ<\/strong>, appeared in Trapani in the late 16<sup>th<\/sup>-early 17<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0centuries by means of the Company of the Blood of Christ, which later merged with the Brotherhood of St. Michael (1646). \u00a0The strict guidelines issued by the Council of Trent and the arrival in Trapani of the Jesuits greatly contributed to establishing this tradition.<br \/>\nThe Jesuits, in particular, had\u00a0<em>penitential mission<\/em>\u00a0in their catechism program with the goal of evangelizing the lower classes through spectacular elements such as processions and ceremonies, likely to generate religious piety and\u00a0<em>compunction<\/em>.<br \/>\nLocal guilds were entrusted with keeping and parading each one of the sacred groups.<\/p>\n<p>The technique used for the construction of the statues is the so-called \u2018<strong>canvas, wood and glue<\/strong>\u2019, allowing the artist to carefully sculpt on wood faces, hands, feet and visible body parts. These parts are then applied to a structure of chestnut wood covered with cork in order to give volume without increasing its weight.<\/p>\n<p>Clothing is made of canvas impregnated with plaster and animal glue, and draped in soft folds.
